5040 5050 5978 4087 1964-05-15 Sharpness

There are just two men working and it is Friday - no wonder this breaker was so slow!

Peter Kerslake says "Coopers' Metals breakers' yard at Sharpness on the Gloucestershire bank of the River Severn seems a little out of place, with houses in this small hamlet so close to all the action.
This view is of the top end of the line and is from my second visit, dated 15th. May, 1965 and by the time of my third visit on 23rd. August both 5050 and 5040 were in a far more advanced state of cutting up than seen here.
All separated from their respective tenders , which were on the adjacent line and were, I believe, used for carrying the reclaimed metals, from right to left here are 4087 "Cardigan Castle", 5040 "Stokesay Castle" 5050 "Earl of St. Germans", 5978 "Bodinnick Hall" with a 22XX and three "Moguls"
