5023 1956-05-22 Laira
In February 1956 all members of the "King" class were taken out of service for repairs to their bogies wich had shown signs of cracks in their frames. Additional duties were undertaken, therefore, by members of the "Castle" class, one of which was Laira's 5023, "Brecon Castle" which was pressed into service on heavy express duties between Plymouth and Paddington which would have normally been worked by " Kings".
By April of that year 5023 had herself been "stopped" at Laira with a "hot box" on its leading driving axle and is seen here with that axle removed under the crane at Laira. The offending axle will be sent to Swndon for remetalling.
