3429 1930s Oxford

3429 1930s Oxford

Great Western Railway Dean 'Bulldog' class 4-4-0 No. 3429. Built at Swindon in July 1906 as GWR No. 3719 'Penzance', re-numbered to 3429 in Dec. 1912 and withdrawn in September 1939.

A photograph (presumably taken with a track permit) at Oxford Station in the 1930s of 3429 with the 3pm Newcastle-Bournemouth working. This particular 'Bulldog' was not one of a group that lost their names in 1930 after a management decision that locomotives with place names could confuse the traveling public into believing it was the train's destination! The LNER seemingly narrowly avoided the public eating Gresley's A3 'Sandwich'!!!
