Great Western Railway Dean '3600' class 2-4-2 Tank No. 3605. Built at Swindon in April 1902 and withdrawn in December 1930.
A successful foray by William Dean into a design of fast, suburban passenger tanks. The class of 31 had been superseded by 2-6-2 Tanks by the 1930s. This early view at Slough MPD in 1903 shows the commodious cab that led to the class nickname of 'Birdcages'. Note the driver with a grease gun also an oil can and spare lamp on the running plate.
I beleive these locos were fitted with water pick up scoops and the large mushroom tank vents were fitted after an incident when the normal vents were unable to lose the air quick enough and the tanks split open!
