6006 1937-07-15 London Paddington
GWR King class 4-6-0 No 6006 King George I waits to leave Paddington with the 7.10pm express for Birmingham Snow Hill on July 15, 1937. Its original straight top feed pipes have been changed to ones which curve back behind the nameplates and its original Jaeger pattern speedometer has been replaced by the type fitted to the whole class by 1937.
Peter Kerslake adds "A fine portrayal of 6006 at Paddingtonfrom 1937 when the locomotive was allocated to its longstanding home at Wolverhampton Stafford Road, to where it had gone in Auust 1930 following short periods at Old Oak Common and Laira.
This view shows that the top lamp bracket has been moved down to to the smokebox door although the footstep is still in place on the door, whilst the smoothed casing over the inside valve chest shows up well, and the later design of brass cover on the leading axles on the bogie has been fitted.
6006 lasted until February 1962 being the first "King" to be withdrawn, and met its end in Swindon's infamous "C" Shop just two months later.
