6019 6952 1960-09 Swindon Works
There was invariably an engine fresh from the paint shop at Swindon Works turntable ready to greet visitors as they entered the Works from the adjacent subway and steps, and this fine image has 6952, " Kimberley Hall " in company with 6019 " King Henry V ", both of which are being readied to return to duty once they have been passed as ready to leave following a spell of local " Running-in " local passenger workings.
What is of interest is that 6019, which had entered the Works for a Heavy General Overhaul in late June that year was transferred to Cardiff Canton on the 19th of this month, one of the six " Kings " reallocated from Old Oak in an effort to find suitable work for them.
Canton's shedmasters didn't really want them, as they had their own well maintained allocation of " Castles " and " Britannias ", all well able to handle the demanding and tightly timed express workings to and from Paddington and although the "Kings " remained at Canton for about two years suitable work for them was not readily available, but they did when required work to Paddington from Cardiff on the principal South Wales express rosters in addition to workings to Shrewsbury and Pontypool Road.
6019 was returned to Old Oak Common in March 1962 in the hope that the 1962 Summer Services would provide suitable work from Paddington, but it was not to be and was withdrawn in September that year, sold to Cashmores at Newport.
