6019 6025 1956-08-05 Plymouth
Summer Saturday Spectacular at Plymouth on 5th. August 1956 with Laira's 6025 pilot to Old Oak Common's 6019 heading into North Road station with the 10.35.a.m. departure from Paddington.
The Royal Eye Infirmary is in the background and no wonder with all those engines in the siding that a notice on those railings asked enginemen to keep smoke and noise to a minimum for the benefit of patients!
6025 has worked from Paddington to Newton Abbot with the 10.30.a.m., the " Cornish Riviera" but as this train did not stop at Plymouth on Summer Saturdays it has come off at Newton Abbot to await arrival of the second portion, departing the Capital and running just five minutes behind, and from Newton Abbot the sight of two " Kings" running over the South Devon banks into Plymouth on such Summer Saturdays was well worth capturing on film
Peter Kerslake says " The second of my two pictures of Laira's 6025 piloting Old Oak's 6019 into Plymouth North Road on Saturday, 5th. August, 1956 with the 10.35.a.m. from Paddington, the second portion of the down "Cornish Riviera". 6025, which had worked down on the 10.30.a.m. from the Capital, came off that train at Newton Abbot as that portion was non stop through Plymouth on Summer Saturdays and would have waited at Newton Abbot to pilot what was often a "King" on the second part of the "Riviera" over the banks to Plymouth
