6014 1956 Snow Hill

6014 1956 Snow Hill

This is Snow Hill and the date is '50s as the King has a single chimnay and there is no sign of Lloyd House (HQ of West Midlands police) being built on Weaman Street in the left hand background. This was built 1960-64 by the architects Kelly and Surman. This is obviously a train from Paddington.

For any enthusiast who wondered what the little bracket just visible here on the front of the inside valve chest on 6014 was, this picture provides the answer as it was a remnant of the engine's GWR streamlined days and was used, as seen here, to carry the Reporting Number frame which the streamlined and rounded smokebox door was unable to accommodate during that short lived experiment.
6014, in company with " Manorbier Castle " which was also so fitted, carried the bracket throughout the rest of its working life and even though it was now capable of having the Reporting Number frame in its customary position on the smokebox door it is often pictured with the frame carried as shown here.
6014 had the distinction of being the last blue liveried " King ", and was transferred from Plymouth's Laira Depot to Wolverhampton Stafford Road in exchange for 6004 in February 1954 following a Heavy General Overhaul at Swindon during which it lost its blue livery and became green, like the rest !
