30585 1957-09-03 Boscarne Junction sidings

30585 1957-09-03 Boscarne Junction sidings

What a delightful portrayal of 30585, typical motive power on this line deep in Cornwall's "China Clay Country" with her load of 13 ton open wagons, in use from 1910 or so and still in use seventy years or so later for China Clay traffic.
Later years saw these wagons fitted with a "Clayhood", a more efficient way of safeguarding the load, and replacing the earlier primitive tarpaulin covers.
Quarried mainly in the Saint Austell area of Cornwall, China Clay was shipped away from Fowey Docks to many foreign destinations, as well as being transported to Staffordshire for the Potteries where it was used in the manufacture of ceramics and pottery within the famous "Five Towns"

Such a characteristic shot of what look like empty china clay wagons at the sidings at Boscarne , doubtless heading up the line for replenishment at Wenford and the china clay workings there before later running back fully loaded down here to the " main line " and thereafter onwards to Bodmin General and Fowey Docks.
These were the duties for which the three surviving Beattie Well Tanks will be forever remembered even though in their early years from 1870 the class had been working in and around London on suburban passenger services before the three remaining survivors in the shape of 298 , 314 and 329 were , in the late 1890's , transferred fro the Capital all the way down to Cornwall .
Sadly , 30586 ( the original 329 and later 3329 ) did not make it into preservation and was cut up upon withdrawal in 1962 but 30585 shown here , in company with 30587 were both saved and happily survive today
