92220 1964-05-14 Gloucester Central
Peter Kerslake says "An interesting view of 92220 " Evening Star " heading a load of oil tank wagons up from South Wales destined fro Birmingham and approaching Tramway Crossing here at Gloucester with Horton Road Motive Power Depot also in the picture , our cameraman being at the northern end of Eastgate station platforms
At this date 922220 was allocated to Cardiff East Dock Depot , her former home at Cardiff Canton , to where she had been allocated from new in March of 1960 , having closed to steam in September of 1962.
In August of 1962 " Evening Star " had been transferred from Canton to Bath Motive Power Depot in an effort to reduce the high volume of double heading necessary on the Somerset and Dorset line in the busy Summer months but the use of this engine and several of her sisters only partially eased the problem and following the massive reduction in long distance passenger workings over the Somerset and Dorset following the redirection of such services via Banbury , Oxford and Basingstoke at the end of the 1962 Summer Services 92220 was relegated to local stopping passenger workings .
Canton having closed to steam , 92220 was accordingly returned to Cardiff , but now to East Dock Depot , in early 1963.
Following a collision with another locomotive in early 1965 at her new home 92220 was condemned and was towed to a breaker's yard at Severn Tunnel Junction but was saved from the breakers' torches as her preservation was planned , the locomotive being overhauled at Crewe two years later."
