92220 1964-05-14 Gloucester Central
Peter Kerslake says "The last steam locomotive built at Swindon in the shape of 92220 "Evening Star" working through Gloucester but now shedded at Cardiff East Dock Depot, from where it was withdrawn the following year after an accident on that shed which resulted in serious front end damage.
Initially based at Cardiff Canton from new in March of 1960 "Evening Star" was frequently used in its early days by the Shedmasters at Canton on express passenger duties, including workings on the "Red Dragon" between Cardiff and Paddington. In August 1962, just a month before Canton closed to steam, 92220 joined a number of other Standard Class Nines working from Bath Depot over the Somerset and Dorset main line in an effort to reduce the frequent need for double heading of Summer long distance and heavily loaded passenger workings between Bath and Bournemouth.
The exercise was only partially sucessfull, however, and with the reduction in such services after the 1962 Summer Timetable 92220 was returned to Cardiff, but now to East Dock Depot.
Saved from the breakers' torches at Severn Tunnel Junction in 1965 "Evening Star" is happily still with us, presently safe and secure at York. We will never however know who R&M from Neath are."
