92241 1962 Patchway
A splendid shot from here with 92241 climbing away from Patchway Tunnel towards Patchway station with a freight from South Wales after having worked through the Severn Tunnel . The down line on the left , running down towards the tunnels , is on the site of the original single track laid in 1863 linking Bristol to just the eastern side of the Severn . Due to the severe gradients already existing on this line , when extended in 1886 upon the opening of the Severn Tunnel , a new line on which 92241 is working was laid with a long , but more gradual one in one hundred climb from Pilning to Patchway , much less severe than the original line. Freights using the Severn tunnel from Wales to Bristol and beyond were required to have an additional enclosed brakevan at the rear for safety reasons , this additional brakevan being uncoupled by the customary banking engine at Pilning ready to be run back down through the Severn Tunnel for its next job. The line on the right is a refuge siding running from this side of Patchway station
