5069 1960-04-17 Cardiff Canton

GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5069 Isambard Kingdom Brunel at Cardiff Canton shed after working a Saltash to Barry Island excursion on April 17, 1960.
Peter Kerslake says "The Tamarside town of Saltash seems a strange place from which an excursion to Barry Island would begin but perhaps it was a locally organised Methodist Church event and I expect that it picked up more patrons at Plymouth. Laira's shedmaster has entrusted his 5069 to the duty, and Canton has given it a well replenished tender of coal for the run back home. Built in June 1938 5069 was initially allocated to Old Oak Common, but spent its later years at Laira, from where it was condemned in February 1962."
