30784 1953-09-06 Bournemouth shed

King Arthur N15 Class 4-6-0 No 30784 ‘Sir Nerovens’ (71A) at Bournemouth shed in September 1953. The engine had been fitted with a fabricated spark arresting chimney which it carried briefly in early BR days, but was later replaced by a conventional chimney. As a spark arresting device the chimney was deemed succesful but the deleterious effects it had on steaming, made it one of the black sheep members of its class. The strange looking device earned tis locomotive the nickname of ‘beefeater’ for obvious reasons.
Built 1925; w/d October 1959.
