The David P Williams Archive incorporates images taken by other photographers. All are from original negatives (not prints) and include some from well-known cameramen of years gone by, such as Henry C. Casserley. In recent times there has been a thriving internet market for quality railway negatives and many of the images seen here have been purchased in this way. Where possible, the original photographer has been named in the credits but in most cases the identity of the photographer is not known.

Some negatives have been given by friends and colleagues who shared the same interest in railway photography, including John D Batten and Peter H Rigg. The Archive covers the period 1890s to 1960s and is exclusively devoted to steam. It includes extremely rare glass whole plate negatives from the GWR Broad Gauge era.
