62767 1953-07-04 York

Ex-LNER Gresley 'D49/2' class 4-4-0 No. 62767 'The Grove'. Built at Darlington in November 1934 as LNER No. 364 and withdrawn in October 1958.

Entering York Station from the north is 'The Grove' fitted with Lentz rotary-cam poppet valves. This valve gear performed much better than on the six existing oscillating cam version, so all future D49s were built with this new valve gear. It was also used on 'P2' 2-8-2 No. 2001 Cock o' the North. Behind the first coach (which is an ex-GWR 'Toplight' full brake with additional plating on the lower panels of the doors) are four very smart looking horse boxes, all of late NER design, then one of GER origin so the train may have come from Ripon, Wetherby, Thirsk or Catterick all of which were on routes to York and each of them had a racecourse.
