Ex-South Eastern & Chatham Railway Wainwright/Maunsell 'D1' class 4-4-0 No. 31739. Built at Ashford in January 1902 as SE&CR No. 730, rebuilt from class 'D' to class 'D1' at Ashford in 1927 and withdrawn in December 1961. The SE&CR 'D' and 'D1' classes of 4-4-0 were long-lived and successful locomotives. Maunsell updated Wainwright's 'D' class by changing to a Belpaire type boiler and this uprated an already excellent locomotive into a superb one. The 'D1s' were quite possibly one of the best 4-4-0 designs in Britain. 31739 is seen in the sunshine at Bricklayers Arms MPD in October 1956.
