Ex-Southern Railway Maunsell 'D1' class 4-4-0 No. 31739. Originally built at Ashford (as SE&CR class 'D') in Feb. 1901. Rebuilt at Ashford in Apr. 1927 as class 'D1' SR No. 739 and withdrawn in Nov. 1961. A fine photograph of well-groomed 31739 arriving at Ramsgate, Kent in March 1957. They were excellent and capable locomotives, heading expresses on the 'Chatham' main line until electrification of this, their primary route, in June 1959. The class was extinct by November 1961.
