Richard Maunsell's 1926 built 'L1' class of 4-4-0s for the Southern Railway, were an 'uprated' version of Harry Wainwright's earlier SE&CR 'L' class. Only 15 'L1s' were built to augment London to Folkestone expresses. Withdrawal of the class took place 1959-62. This portrait was taken at Ashford MPD in August 1954.
