1336 1953-02-22 Swindon Stock Shed
Inside the stock-shed near the Locomotive Depot at Swindon is 2-4-0 no. 1336, the last of the 29 Midland & South Western Railway locomotives taken over by the GWR in July 1923, only three of which (all 2-4-0s) remained at the end of 1938 and through the War until 1952. No. 1336 was built in 1894 and withdrawn in 3/54.
Peter Kerslake adds "Built in 1894 and taken into G.W.R. stock number 1336 is seen her stored within Swindon Works stock shed where many locomotives were kept in the hope that work could be found for them rather than have them cut up before their time was up.
In her working life with the Great Western and then the Western Region 1336 spent twenty five years allocated to Reading Motive Power Depot working local passenger and freight rosters in and around the Reading and Newbury areas prior to being withdrawn in March of 1952 and going into store here at Swindon.
This locomotive worked a number of enthusiasts' specials following this view from February of 1953 but she ended up back here again at Swindon for a further year before being disposed of in May of 1954.
An interesting fact is that when earlier examples of this class were withdrawn by the G.W.R. during the 1930's five of their tenders were converted into use as mobile water carriers with their centre axles removed."
