NER 657 1906 York Clifton Sidings
North Eastern Railway Fletcher '93' class 0-6-0 No. 657. Withdrawn in October 1908.
Details of the '93' class are sketchy, but it consisted of locomotives built from 1860 by a variety of contractors and some from the NER's Gateshead works. This fine portrait shows 657 in its latter days at York Clifton sidings. Over the years, it has received a full cab, coal rails added to the tender, a Worsdell chimney replacing the Fletcher stovepipe version originally fitted, the dome-mounted Salter safety valves have been replaced and the smokebox door is the twin handle type. In summary, many new broom heads and many more new broom handles!
