NER 694 1908-05 Whitby Esk Terrace

NER 694 1908-05 Whitby Esk Terrace

North Eastern Railway Worsdell 'W' class 4-6-0 Tank No. 694. Built at Gateshead in April 1908. Rebuilt in May 1915 as a 'W1' (LNER'A6') class 4-6-2 Tank and withdrawn in February 1951 as BR No. 69798. Other than the official works photograph, I believe this is possibly the only other view of a NER 'W' class as originally built. 694 is seen brand new at Esk Terrace, Whitby in May 1908. The water and coal capacity of the 'Ws' was deemed insufficient for their designed duties on the steeply graded coastal route between Scarborough and Whitby. All ten were therefore rebuilt as 4-6-2 Tanks.
