NER 2149 1925 York

NER 2149 1925 York

North Eastern Railway Raven 'D' (LNER 'H1') class 4-4-4 Tank No. 2147. Built at Darlington in December 1913 and rebuilt to a class 'A8' 4-6-2 Tank in August 1933. Withdrawn May 1960 as BR No. 69854.

The 4-4-4 wheel arrangement was uncommon on the railways of Britain. The LNER inherited only two such classes, eight 'H2s' from the Metropolitan Railway and forty-five 'H1s' from the NER. The 'H1s' were all rebuilt in the mid 1930s to the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement that proved to give better adhesion and stability. 2147 is seen at the north end of York Station in 1925, yet to receive its LNER livery.
