NER 3711 1907-08 York Station

NER 3711 1907-08 York Station

North Eastern Railway Petrol Rail Inspection Car No. 3711. Built at York Carriage Works in Aug. 1907 (as per works plate) and withdrawn in Feb. 1939. A fascinating photograph of brand new 3711 taken at the south end of York Station. The NER employee looks as if he is 'not to be messed with'! The car was designed for inspection journeys, fitted with a central 6-seat map table. The engine type is unknown, but probably capable of about 35-40bhp at 950rpm achieving 12mpg and up to 55mph. Emergency couplings were fitted in case it had to be towed. 3711 was based at Middlesbrough before moving to Darlington.
