North Eastern Railway W.Worsdell 'Q' (LNER 'D') class 4-4-0 No. 1874, Built at Gateshead in June 1896 and withdrawn in October 1938 as LNER No. 1874. The City of Carlisle boasted no less than eight locomotive sheds all owned by different pre-grouping companies. This is the NER's Carlisle London Road shed photographed c.1914. The immaculate appearance of No. 1874 was the norm in an era when labour was plentiful and cheap.
