70020 1962 Patricroft
During its short period off 9A Longsight between June and September 1962. Following the fatal acident with 70026 Polar Star at Milton, on the main line between Swindon and Reading whilst working an excursion on a Sunday in 1955 the majority of the Britannias had their smoke deflector handrails removed in order to increase the footplatemens' forward vision. 70020 Mercury, as seen here has the Midland style of handholds now substituted, a job which might have been done at Crewe Works, the engine now having been displaced from its former duties at Old Oak Common on the Western Region, in company with its fellow members of the class with the introduction of Diesel power on that Region's main line workings .
