70021 1963c Crewe North
This view of 70021 Morning Star here at Crewe has the engine running without its cylinder head cover, which has probably got lost somewhere, the engine having been transferred to The Midland Region at Manchster's Trafford Park from the Western Region in July1958. Delivered from new in August1951 to Plymouth's Laira Depot Morning Star was a regular on the rostered duties down to Penzance, including the Cornish Riviera express, as well as working from Plymouth to Paddington and northwards to Bristol on what were invariably heavily loaded passenger and express freight duties. When suitable work for the Laira, Newton Abbot and Old Oak Common Britannias diminished in late 1956 Morning Star, in company with its nine sisters, was sent down to Cardiff Canton where they joined and shared duties with that shed's newer and better maintained five members of the class, especially on the tightly timed express passenger workings between Cardiff and Paddington, including the Red Dragon before the wholesale transfer of all fifteen to the Midland Region. In this view 70021 still retains its original style of handrails on the smoke deflectors which had earlier been replaced on most of the class by cut out handholds following the derailment at Milton on the Western Region of Canton's 70026 Polar Star in November1955 .
