In June 1954, Great Northern Railway (Ireland) H.R. McIntosh 'VS' class 4-4-0 No. 209 'Foyle' has just crossed the River Boyne Viaduct at Drogheda in Co. Louth, Eire. One of a five-strong class, she had been built by Beyer Peacock in 1948 and was withdrawn in 1960. The five locomotives in this class were 'simple' versions of George Glover's earlier 'V' class compounds that had been introduced in 1932. The main external difference is the smoke deflectors fitted to the 'VS' series.
