Experimental Turf Burner 1954-06-13 Inchicore Works-SA-KW

Experimental Turf Burner 1954-06-13 Inchicore Works-SA-KW

Seen in June 1954 at Inchicore Works, Dublin this remarkable CIE 'locomotive' was in fact merely a static test bed for Oliver Bulleid's ideas to determine if peat could be used as viable fuel. Coal shortages and good availability of peat turf were the catalysts for this experiment. A converted ex-GS&WR 'K3' class 2-6-0 No.356 was the hapless recipient of this ill-fated scheme. However, Bulleid persisted with his 'CC1' 0-6-6-0 turf burner locomotive but the overly complex technology did not match his aspirations and this curious locomotive was only in service from July 1957 until May 1958 - when Bulleid retired.
n.b. Apologies for any errors in this description. Irish railways are not my strong point but I have tried to provide correct details where known!
