7034 1964-10-31 Gloucester Central

7034 1964-10-31 Gloucester Central

This is how "Ince Castle" looked in her last weeks in service , one of three of her class left , pretty much run down with an improvised smokebox door number plate , although most unusually for this period of time still carrying her cabside number plates and even her nameplates as well !
Gloucester's Horton Road shed is off to the right of this view and it was from here that 7034 ended its working days being worked on a freight in the area for the last time over the weekend of 19th. and 20th. days of June 1965 before spending two months on that shed's "Dead Line" and subsequent removal to Birds at Bridgend for disposal.
Destined to be one of the last four " Castles " remaining in service by the Spring of 1965 in company with 5042 , " Winchester Castle " , 7022 " Hereford Castle " and 7029 , " Clun Castle " , all working from 82B , Gloucester shed , this engine was eventually withdrawn over the weekend of 19th. / 20th. June 1965 , spending some while thereafter out of service on that shed before going to Birds at Bridgend for disposal .
Seen here at Gloucester Central on 31st. October 1964 " Ince Castle " is probably on a freight duty.
Her smokebox door numberplate is an improvised replacement for the original , but she stil has all her name and cabsid numberplates intact
