Laira's 5098, "Clifford Castle" runs along the estuary of the River Plym on 4th. March, 1956 with the Sunday "North to West " express which it has taken over at Bristol Temple Meads. The two end coaches, with roofboards , are probably through coaches from Glasgow, added to this train at Crewe , the main train having probably originated at Manchester, with coaches from Liverpool as well being added at Crewe. The rearmost van could well be an Enparts van, added at Bristol and containing locomotive parts and the like for Laira from Swindon Works.

There's somewhat of a mixture of stock in the train, including a couple of vans, the one at the very end probably being an Enparts van from Swindon , added at Bristol, with locomotive parts for Laira and Cornwall, whilst a couple of coaches carry roofboards.
Just out of my shot on the left is the site of the old China Clay line which was hores drawn and brought China Clay down from Lee Moor to the wharves at Cattedown, Plymouth.
A favourite and regular Sunday afternoon walk or cycle ride from Laira shed ! The "Distant" signal has not cleared and 5098's driver has shut off steam in case he's not got the road through Lipson Junction which is just ahead.
