5098 1956-05-21 Hemerdon
Laira shed's cleaners have turned out their own 5098, " Clifford Castle " in sparkling condition for its turn of duty on 21st. May, 1956. Pictured on the lower slopes of Hemerdon Bank, 5098 is on the 2.p.m. from Plymouth to Paddington and with no pilot engine for the banks to Newton Abbot 5098's load must therefore, be within the limit for an unassisted "Castle". Taken from Stoggy Lane, about a third of the way up Hemerdon bank Laira's 5098 "Clifford Castle" makes a fine sight with the 2.p.m. from Plymouth to Paddington on the 21st. of May, 1956. Laira's cleaners have sent her out in splendid condition and without a pilot engine to spoil the picture my luck was in. The fields in the background are today covered in overspill development and high security fencing makes a picture like this almost impossible today
