1427 1954-08-30 Totnes
Auto-train from Ashburton arriving at Totnes
It is headed by Collett 0-4-2T No. 1427 (built 11/33 as No. 4827, renumbered 11/46, withdrawn 6/60). The service ceased from 3/11/58 (goods 1/9/62), but was taken over in 1969 by the Dart Valley (South Devon Railway from 1991).
Peter Kerslake adds "Allocated to Newton Abbot at this time in 1954 and in company with several others of her class little 1427 would have shared duties such as the one worked here , namely the Ashburton branch , with workings between Churston and Brixham as well as the Moretonhampstead branch running from Newton Abbot .
Situated between Rattery bank to the west and Dainton to the east Totnes was the centre of Daws important milk and dairy creamery , the tall chimney of which is visible in this view and fully loaded milk tank wagons would be added here to eastbound milk trains heading up from Cornwall to the Capital "
