70045 1965-07 Basingstoke
Allocated to Oxley at the time but shortly to move to Banbury.
Peter Kerslake says "Allocated to Wolverhampton's Oxley depot at the date of this view 70045 "Lord Rowallan" is most certainly a "stranger in the camp" here and far from home recorded in Southern territory at Basingstoke in July 1965.
Certain it was that in June of that year three "Britannias" were sent down from Holyhead to Oxley to assist with the additional passenger traffic running on Summer Saturdays from the West Midlands down to Bristol and beyond, and this engine was one, the other two being the unnamed 70047 and 70053 "Moray Firth" with 70030 "William Wordsworth" also making an appearance.
At the end of the 1965 Summer Services instead of returning to Oxley or Holyhead the three "Britannias" were housed for four months at Banbury joining five others there from September 1965 until January 1966 when all eight "Britannias" at Banbury went to Carlisle Kingmoor, destined to be their final home before withdrawal."
