70045 1965-07-24 Basingstoke
View westward, towards Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth. The Summer Saturday 11.38 Poole to Wolverhampton (Low Level) express halts at Basingstoke before turning onto the ex-Great Western line to Reading West, then Oxford, Banbury, Birmingham (Snow Hill) and Wolverhampton. BR Britannia Class 7 Pacific No. 70045 'Lord Rowallan' (working in the latter days of steam from Oxley (Wolverhampton) Shed) has taken over from one of the many BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0s then working on the Southern. There is a board wedged behind the smokebox handrail, presumably with the train reporting number on it.
Peter Kerslake adds "Yes, 70045 "Lord Rowallan" had been allocated to Wolverhampton's Oxley Depot from June1965 so would have worked through from Wolverhampton on this duty, but the engine was only destined to spend three months at Oxley before moving to Banbury in September, 1965 that imprtant Depot, originally a part of the Western Region, having been transferred to the Midland Region in 1963.
Whilst at Oxley "Lord Rowallan" was used to supplement the additional locomotives required for the 1965 Summer Saturday Services from the Midlands down to the Westcountry, in company with 70047 and 70053, the locomotives running from Wolverhampton down as far as Bristol before returning hiome again later the same afternoon".
