70042 70021 1965 Preston
Two Crewe North 'Britannias' side by side in early 1965, No. 70042 Lord Roberts on an express and No. 70021 Morning Star on a parcels train. Both were transferred to Crewe South in June of that year when the North shed was closed.
Two " Britannias " for the price of one here and each with a different story to tell, with 70042 " Lord Roberts " one of the class allocated from new in April1953 to the Eastern Region's Stratford Depot before moving across to the London Midland Region five years later, initially being shedded at Kentish Town from May1958 .
its companion here, 70021 " Morning Star " had a very different history, however, having spent its early years in the Westcountry, being allocated to Plymouth's Laira Depot from new in August1951, one of four " Britannias " there, until going to Cardiff Canton, in company with all the Western Region's " Britannias ", in January1957 .
The whole class finally ended up on the Midland Region as work for the class diminished, with wholesale withdrawal from Carlisle Kingmoor taking place in 1967 .
