70042 1967-04-01 Thrimby Grange

BR Britannia class 7MT 4-6-2 No 70042 drifts down grade past Thrimby Grange with a ballast train from Shap Quarry on April 1, 1967.

Peter Kerslake says "70042 "Lord Roberts" was an early transfer away from its home on the Eastern Region at Stratford, moving to the Midland Region at Kentish Town in May1958 some two years before the mass transfer of many of the class from Norwich Motive Power Depot to Immingham and March and thereafter to the Midland Region.
At the date of this view in April1967 it was based at its last home at Carlisle Kingmoor from where it was condemned just a month after this photograph.
This view shows tht the engine retained the original handrails on the smoke deflectors until the end, unlike many others of the class which had replacement hand holds cut into the deflectors following the accident at Milton on the Western Region with 70026 "Polar Star" on the 20th November 1955 which was in part attributed to this original design of handrail obscuring the driver's forward vision."
