Peter Kerslake says "The last of the class, 62694 James Fitzjames had been constructed during 1924 and followed on from the original batch of eleven "Improved Directors" built by the Great Central Railway in 1919.
The 24 LNER built engines were to a loading gauge permitting their use over former North British Railway lines and were all based north of the border, with a number bestowed with names from characters in the novels of Sir Walter Scott.
The earlier GCR examples spent their later years working within the Eastern Counties and the Manchester area, five being based at Northwich in 1956, four at Lincoln and one each at Trafford Park and Immingham, working a wide range of long distance and secondary passenger duties serving such destinations as Chester, Nottingham and Derby."
