Peter Kerslake says "W34W was one of the 38 diesel railcars introduced on the G.W.R. from 1934 and together with W17W it was purpose built for parcels work with no passenger carrying capacity. The two had body work constructed at Swindon Works. In 1956 W34W was based at Southall operating in and Paddington and the Thames Valley area at this time."
