W30W 1958c Windsor & Eton Central
A wet day at Windsor & Eton Central with a pair GWR diesel railcars, Nos W30W and W27W, arriving from Slough in c 1958.
Peter Kerslake says "Introduced by the G.W.R. in 1933, eventually totalling thirty eight and with the last example remaining in service until the early 'sixties the Railcar W30W and her sister unit seen here display the sharply designed wedge shaped leading ends whilst a number of the class had a more rounded design, more pleasing to the eye.
In my 1956 shedbbook W30W, together with four of her sisters, was shown as being allocated to Southall Depot which would doubtless have been responsible for the services to here at Wndsor.
The later units, from W18W were equipped with two of the original single power units each producing 121 h.p. and in 1956 there were thirty five of the original total of thirty eight of the class still operating, being found as far afield as Worcester down to Weymouth and in Wales Depots at Newport, Landore and Canton all had one each on their respective books.
Two have survived into preservation with W22W being housed at Didcot whilst W4W is at York."
