GWR DRC 5 1930s Banbury
No5 waits in Platform 4 with an auto coach behind, as a King pulls in with a train from Wolverhampton. The old station was in poor condition before rebuilding with its archaic overall roof. Private owners from the Co-op and Midland Tar Distillers stand in the yard, a true pre-war scene at an unknown date. A small clue to the date is that the ' King ' has the original smoothed plating over the inside cylinder and valve chest and the Great Western very soon changed that design as the members of the class went through Swindon Works to the chequered design less likely to cause the footplate and shed crews to lose their foothold when changing lamps or attending to the engines whilst on shed. In addition , Railcar no. 5 looks brand spanking new in this image , and she was built in 1935 , the first of the three introduced that year for use on a Cardiff at Birmingham prestige service , complete with a mini Buffet and toilet for her seventy passengers . Although entering service with a single A.E.C. built power unit producing 121 h.p. she , in company with her sisters , was later given a second propulsion unit thereby doubling her power output.
