W8W 1960-03 Stourbridge

W8W 1960-03 Stourbridge

One of the original GWR ‘Flying Bananas’ No.W8W, still at Stourbridge in March 1960, long after its withdrawal in January 1959. It had been based there for over twenty years and regularly worked one of the two scheduled daily turns between Snow Hill Station and Dudley as well as shuttling backwards and forwards on the short distance service between Old Hill and Dudley.

Peter Kerslake adds "Records indicate that Railcar number 8 had initially been allocated to Bristol St. Philip's Marsh Depot from new in March of 1936 to be used as a spare unit for that Depot's numbers 10 and 15 but she was certainly at Stourbridge in the mid 'fifties ,being one of three there in 1956.
It would be interesting to learn why the Bristol Railcars were based at St. Philip's Marsh, a Depot dating back from 1910 but which must have had refuelling facilities for the Diesels, rather than at Bath Road which had undergone a major rebuild in 1934.
Whilst at Bristol this Railcar would have seen service on the Portishead branch in addition to working the circular service between Temple Meads through Avonmouth, Severn Beach and Pilning in both directions, a regular duty for these units. "
