W8W 1953-09-12 Welshpool
The railcar W8W visited Welshpool on a special in September 1953 - or is this actually W14W which visited on 1956-09-09?
On 12th September 1953 GWR Railcar No. W8W visited Welshpool with the Railway Development Association tour from Birmingham to the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway where they were accommodated in 4 open wagons hauled by No. 823 and topped and tailed with brake vans.
Peter Kerslake says "Yes , this certainly looks like Railcar number 8 which is already on site and recorded here at Welshpool on the Special working 12th. September 1953, so perhaps the date of this view is incorrect.
The difficulty is that both Railcars numbered 8 and 14 were housed at Stourbridge Junction in the mid 'fifties, and both were built by the Gloucester Railway and Carriage Company so looked the same, but I think that this is a second photograph of number 8 from the 1953 visit, doubtless from the same cameraman who's crossed over to the far platform.
The Gloucester built Railcars, constructed from 1935 and numbered from five to sixteen, were similar in some ways to the initial four built by Park Royal although not quite as handsome, but all were certainly more attractive than the last series of twenty one built at Swindon from 1937 with their rather severe and wedge shaped ends."
