GER B12/1 4-6-0 No 8538, fitted with an ACFI feedwater heater, at Ipswich in the early 1930s.
Peter Kerslake says "Following tests with water heating equipment in 1926 fifty B12s were during 1931 to 1933 fitted with this unsightly apparatus with the twin heat exchanging drums on the boiler top and the feed pump and its associated pipework on the footplating. However, the local poor quality water rendered the equipment expensive to maintain and it was removed around 1937."
