D229 1959 Chorlton Lane Bridge 72

By 1959 the WCML electrification was underway and the catenary supports had already been erected. Steam was still the primary motive power but the new generations of diesel were rapidly taking charge of many workings. Here is BR Class 40 No. D229 heads an up express near Crewe at Chorlton Lane Bridge No.72. D229 was built by English Electric Vulcan Foundry in Aug. 1959 and was withdrawn in Apr. 1984 as TOPS No. 40029.
