84006 1959-05-28 Higham Ferrers

The BR Standard 2MT 2-6-2Ts were like their predecessors, the LMS Ivatt 2-6-2Ts, the epitome of a modern branch line engine, equipped with modern features such as a self-emptying ashpan, rocking grate and self-cleaning smokebox as shown by the SC plate below the Wellingborough shedplate. We thought No.84006 was waiting to depart from Rushden on 28th May 1959, and with closure imminent there is no sign of passengers. However this photo is taken at the branch terminus at Higham Ferrers, not Rushden station, which is in a built up area. The land behind Higham station was undeveloped. The locos ALWAYS faced Higham (because the sidings for the push-pull coaches at Wellingborough necessitated this, as the points were at the south end of the stabling sidings). If this were Rushden, the station buildings would be on the left. Thanks to David Allen for this info.
