5315 1948 York

5315 1948 York

LMS Stanier 'Black 5' class 4-6-0 No. 5315. Built by Armstrong Whitworth of Newcastle in February 1937 and withdrawn in September 1963 as BR No. 45315.

The south end of York Station once boasted this magnificent ex-NER signal gantry and the huge adjacent signal box. All to be swept away in the early 1950s with the advent of electronic signalling. 5315 is shunting a pair of coaches that will be attached to a southbound train. Although this is 1948, the locomotive is still in grubby LMS livery.
