82020 1962-06-18 Minfford

On the 3-45pm Barmouth-Pwllheli.

Peter Kerslake says "This is the eastern or Barmouth end of Minfford station , with 82020 heading west down to Pwllheli , this location being between Portmadoc to the west and Penrhyndeudraeth to the east.
The bridge seen here carries the narrow gauge Festiniog line , passenger access to that line from this main line station being by way of a pathway , whilst the line on the right heads into the substantial and busy goods yards , part of which is also just visible .
This main line station was situated at a high level , being reached by way of a one in fifty climb from Portmadoc with a gradient at its steepest of one in sixty five from the east , so double headed workings were commonplace.
Slate from the local sources made up a considerable amount of freight traffic for many past years here at Minfford, together with granite from the nearby Minfford quarry , and with goods and passengers interchanging between the two rail systems Minfford was indeed a busy location over many years.
This view indicates how high and sharply curved the goods sidings were ,and movement of loaded wagons within the goods complex was often a difficult task for the staff and loco crews" .
