16011 1939-08-11 Inverness
Ex-Caledonian Railway D. Drummond '264' (LMS '0F') class 0-4-0 Saddletank No. 16011. Built at St. Rollox in August 1885 as CR No. 270 and withdrawn in January 1959 as BR No. 56011.
Photographs of 'Pugs' performing freight shunting duties are not common, particularly in the pre-BR era. This is Inverness in August 1939 with 16011 manfully tackling a mixed freight that includes a couple of BP tankers. The BP logo seen here was introduced in 1920 and was revised in 1930 to be incorporated within a 'shield' shape. The six pointed star (introduced in 1913) indicated the wagon could be used in a 'fast traffic' train - average speed 35mph and no more than 40 miles between stops.
