68313 1956-04 near Easingwold
Ex-North Eastern Railway T.W. Worsdell 'E' (LNER 'J71') class 0-6-0 Tank No. 68313. Built at Darlington in October 1895 as NER No. 1789 and withdrawn in September 1956. Thomas William Worsdell designed the 120 'J71s' they were simple and very successful, so much so that his successor and younger brother Wilson, based his nearly identical 'J72s' on this design. This gorgeous photograph from April 1954 is the very definition of 'bucolic' as 68313 threads its way through the grass and weeds making its casual 2-mile journey from Alne to Easingwold. It is something of a mystery how the independent Easingwold Light Railway (using hired NER/LNER/BR locomotives) remained in business until 1957!
